Futebol: The Brazilian Way of Life - Alex Bellos
Shortlisted for the WH Smith Sports Book of the Year, Futebol is an irresistible blend of history, anecdote and legend told with great humour and verve by the Guardian's man in Rio. This title shows how Brazil changed football and how football shaped Brazil. The author tells the stories behind the great players, teams and matches, and the startling range of football spinoffs, such as Ecoball, played in the rainforest and the truly alarming Footbull (yes with bulls).
'In this magnificent book, Bellos has managed to perfectly capture the...romance and obsession and the feeling of what it's like to live in a genuinely football-obsessed nation...it's the human stories of dedication to the sport which remain long after you've put the book down' - Four Four Two

Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis - Dom Casmurro
Like other great nineteenth century novels - The Scarlet Letter, Anna Karenina, Madame Bovary - Machado de Assis's Dom Casmurro explores the themes of marriage and adultery. But what distinguishes Machado's novel and what makes it such a delightful discovery is its eccentric and wildly unpredictable narrative style. As he recounts the events of his life from the vantage of a lonely old age, the narrator Bento continually interrupts his story to reflect on the writing of it.
But the novel is more than a performance of stylistic acrobatics. It is an ironic critique of Catholicism, in which God appears as a kind of divine accountant whose ledgers may be balanced in devious as well as pious ways. It is also a story about love and its obstacles, about deception and self-deception, and about the failure of memory to make life's beginning fit neatly into its end.
'Machado de Assis is Brazil's greatest novelist, and ranks high among the most appealing writers in the world...Though he lived mainly in the 19th century, Machado possesses an almost postmodern sensibility - playful, ironic and tricky' - The Washington Post Book World

Jorge Amado - Dona Flor and her Two Husbands
When Dona Flor's husband dies suddenly, she forgets all his defects and remembers only his passion. Erotic nightmares haunt her.
Dr Teodoro, a local pharmacist, proposes marriage and Dona Flor accepts, hoping to recapture the ecstasy she now craves. One night, her first husband materializes naked at the foot of her bed, eager to reclaim his conjugal rights. The visit is the first of many, as Dona Flor, racked by desire but reluctant to betray the upright pharmacist, responds to the ethereal demands of her first husband.
Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands shows why Jorge Amado is Brazil's best-known writer. It is the work of a brilliant story-teller whose love for his characters matches his powers of evocation.

Burle Marx - The Lyrical Landscape
Roberto Burle Marx was one of the most influential landscape and garden designers of the twentieth century. His sweeping forms and painterly approach to planting were revolutionary when they first came to public attention in the 1930s, and many designers today owe his vision a great debt.
Born in 1909 in Sao Paulo, Burle Marx studied painting in Germany before returning to practise in Brazil. He was discovered by the great architect Lucio Costa and was later recognized by Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer, with whom he created some of his most memorable works, including the magnificent Brasilia. Right up until his death he continued to organize expeditions to the jungle, where he discovered unknown species and collected them for cultivation in his immense nurseries.
The core of the book is twenty-six projects, presented through plans - some redrawn from Burle Marx's originals for the first time - specially commissioned photographs, planting schemes and Burle Marx's own paintings. The extensive reference section includes an exhaustive chronology and bibliography.
'This is a hugely important and inspiring book, and should become standard reference for anyone involved in creating a contemporary garden or landscape' - Gardens Illustrated
