Bill Bryson - Notes from a Small Island
After nearly two decades in Britain, Bill Bryson took the decision to move back to the States for a while, to let his kids experience life in another country, to give his wife the chance to shop until 10 p.m. seven nights a week.
But before leaving his much-loved home in North Yorkshire, Bryson insisted on taking one last trip around Britain, a sort of valedictory tour of the green and kindly island that had so long been his home. His aim was to take stock of the nation's public face and private parts (as it were), and to analyse what precisely it was he loved so much about a country that produced Marmite, a military hero whose dying wish was to be kissed by a fellow named Hardy, place names like Farleigh Wallop, Titsey and Shellow Bowells, people who said 'Mustn't grumble', and Gardeners' Question Time.

Charles Darwin - The Origin of Species
Although scientists and philosophers dating back to the Greek civilization had suggested that species evolved rather than remaining fixed, Darwin's Origin of Species, published in 1859, challenged contemporary thought and belief in Divine Providence. In its clarification of the hypothesis of the survival of the fittest - that is the protection of certain well-adapted species by their environment - Darwin set down theories of natural selection and explained why certain species become extinct while others flourish.
Without setting out to be controversial, Darwin upturned the view that the Universe was ordered by a benevolent God. Instead he depicted a world where existence depended on chance and struggle. As such, he was possibly the most revolutionary writer of the Victorian age and this, his greatest work, is a landmark in scientific and philosophical thought.

Mary Wollstonecraft - A Vindication of the Rights of Woman
Writing in an age when the call for the rights of man had brought revolution to America and France, Mary Wollstonecraft produced her own declaration of female independence in 1792.
Passionate and forthright, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman attacked the prevailing view of docile, decorative femininity, and instead laid out the principles of emancipation: an equal education for girls and boys, an end to prejudice, and for women to become defined by their profession, not their partner. Mary Wollstonecraft's work was received with a mixture of admiration and outrage, yet it established her as the mother of modern feminism.

Adam Smith - The Wealth of Nations Books I-III
'It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker, that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest'
With this landmark treatise on political economy, Adam Smith paved the way for modern capitalism, arguing that a truly free market - fired by competition yet guided as if by an 'invisible hand' to ensure justice and equality - was the engine of a fair and productive society. Books I-III of the Wealth of Nations examine the 'division of labour' as the key to economic growth, by ensuring the interdependence of individuals within society. They also cover the origins of money, the importance of wages, profit, rent and stocks. Smith's work laid the foundations of economic theory in general and 'classical' economics in particular, but the real sophistication of his analysis derives from the fact that it also encompasses a combination of ethics, philosophy and history to create a vast panorama of society.
This edition contains an analytical introduction offering an in-depth discussion of Smith as an economist and social scientist, as well as a preface, further reading and explanatory notes.

Adam Smith - The Wealth of Nations Books IV-V
'What encourages the progress of population and improvement encourages that of real wealth and greatness'
In the first three volumes of his seminal work The Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith argued that 'division of labour' is the key to greater economic growth. Volume IV is an incisive examination of the mercantile system, in particular Britain's colonial relationship with America, in which he suggests that economic regulation should be strictly limited and that a laissez-faire approach and free trade are essential to a successful economy. In Volume V Smith develops the case for a restricted state role, advocating a system of part private, part public system of finance for education, transport, justice and defence. Smith's pioneering analysis was hugely influential in his own time, and offers subtle and penetrating insights into debates on economic policy that are still current today.
Andrew Skinner's introduction compares Smith's work with that of economists such as Quesnay and Turgot, places The Wealth of Nations in its historical context and discusses the originality and continuing importance of its ideas. This edition also contains a chronology, appendices and an index.

The Office: The Scripts Series 1
Do you know what upsets David Brent? Wasted talent, yeah? People could come to him, and they could go, ''scuse me David, but you've been in the business 12 years, can you just spare us a moment to tell us how to, you know, run a team, how to keep them task-orientated while, you know, happy?'. But they don't. That's the tragedy.
So the Brentmeister General is now prepared to share with us the scenes of his daily life. The scenarios that really illustrate the principles of great team management. His morale-boosting comedy, his fund of earthy wisdom along with glimpses of the fervent soul beyond the work-related arena, the impassioned singer-songwriter of the potentially highly successful band Foregone Conclusion (a.k.a. supported by Texas).
Including early drafts of the scripts, and introductions to each episode from the show's award-winning creators, Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant, The Office: The Scripts is the definitive comedy script book, providing fans with an invaluable opportunity to relive their favourite moments over and over again.

Tacitus - The Agricola and the Germania
The Agricola is both a portrait of Julius Agricola - the most famous governor of Roman Britain and Tacitus' well-loved and respected father-in-law - and the first detailed account of Britain that has come down to us. It offers fascinating descriptions of the geography, climate and peoples of the country, and a succinct account of the early stages of the Roman occupation, nearly fatally undermined by Boudicca's revolt in AD 61 but consolidated by campaigns that took Agricola as far as Anglesey and northern Scotland.
The warlike German tribes are the focus of Tacitus' attention in the Germania, which, like the Agricola, often compares the behaviour of 'barbarian' peoples favourably with the decadence and corruption of Imperial Rome.
Harold Mattingly's translation brings Tacitus' extravagant imagination and incisive wit vividly to life. In his introduction, he examines Tacitus' life and literary career, the governorship of Agricola, and the political background of Rome's rapidly expanding empire. This edition also includes a select bibliography, and maps of Roman Britain and Germany.
