Anne Frank - The Diary of a Young Girl Anne Frank - The Diary of a Young Girl

Anne Frank was born in Frankfurt am Main in Germany in 1929. She moved to Holland with her family when the Nazis became powerful in Germany. During the Second World War the Nazis occupied Holland and created a police state. The Nazis believed that some races, such as Jews and gypsies, did not deserve the right to live and they started to arrest, transport and kill them. Anne and her family were Jews and were afraid for their lives and so they went into hiding. The family hid in the Secret Annexe at the back of a warehouse from July 1942 until August 1944 when they were discovered by the Nazis.

During the terrible time in hiding and constantly in fear of discovery, Anne was growing from a young girl into a woman and she recorded her thoughts and experiences in a diary. The occupants of the Secret Annexe were betrayed just before the War ended, and were taken off to concentration camps. Anne died of typhus in 1945, just a few months before her sixteenth birthday. Her diary was found after the War and was later published by her father, the only surviving member of the family. It has become a bestseller throughout the world and is an extraordinary piece of writing from such a young girl. It reminds us of the horror of prejudice and persecution as well as telling one girl's remarkable story. One can't help but wonder what sort of writing Anne might have produced if she had survived the horrors of World War II.

Leonardo - Eyewitness Guide Leonardo - Eyewitness Guide

Why is Leonardo da Vinci known as the original 'Renaissance Man'? What deadly weapon did a Renaissance woman keep inside her locket? Why did Leonardo visit the city morgue? Why did 'shaving' florins become a black market practice?

All these questions and more are answered in this Eyewitness Guide. Leonardo da Vinci, painter, philosopher, scientist and engineer, symbolises the Renaissance world. He was the artist who created the Mona Lisa, and the scientist who understood the principals of flight 400 years before the Wright brothers. Like others of his time, he did not separate art from science.

In this book stunning, specially commissioned photographs bring every aspect of Leonardo's Renaissance world to life. Interest in the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome thrived, and a new spirit of observation and enquiry prevailed. In the city-states of Italy, patrons of the arts enabled Leonardo and many others to devote their lives to art and science, and the invention of the printing press allowed their ideas to spread through Europe faster than ever before.

- See Leonardo's design for exploding cannonballs inside a Renaissance home, the original platform shoes, and one of the first pocket watches
- Learn how one family dominated a city for more than two centuries, how gold leaf was applied to altarpieces, when mirrors were first used, and why the ancient world was an inspiration for the modern one
- Discover how the invention of the printing press changed the world, how apprentices made pigments from ground beetles, why glue was used as a beauty aid, and why Leonardo studied a bird's wing to make a flying machine
