Pyramids to rival those of Egypt, ancient cities to rival imperial Rome, and civilizations to rival Greece. Check out our great Mexican Music for Food section: Mexican cuisine, like Mexico itself, is a combination of native America and Spain, with delicious foods from tomatoes, avocados, maize and chocolate.
Chocolate, maize and tobaccoBernal Díaz in The Conquest of New Spain describes how the Aztec Emperor, Montezuma, was served chocolate or xocoatl in cups of pure gold: His servants...brought him, in cups of pure gold, a drink made from the cocoa plant...I saw them bring in a good fifty large jugs of this chocolate, all frothed up...They always served it with great reverence...Montezuma was very fond of music and...would reward his entertainers with the leavings of the food and chocolate...As soon as the great Montezuma had dined, all the guards and many more of his household servants ate in their turn. I think more than a thousand plates of food must have been brought in for them, and more than two thousand jugs of chocolate...and infinite quantities of fruit...handsome women served Montezuma when he was at table with maize cakes kneaded with eggs and other nourishing ingredients. These maize cakes were very white, and were brought in on plates covered with clean napkins...They also placed on the table three tubes, much painted and gilded, in which they put liquidambar mixed with some herbs which are called tobacco.
